What Should You Look for in a Puppy?

What should you look for in a English Cocker Spaniel puppy? This is a bit of a tricky question.

First, you should agree if you want a male or female puppy. English Cocker Spaniel males and females are alike in many respects but there are distinct differences between the sexes that you should be aware of. The breed standard indicates that the males of the breed are on average between 15.5–16 inches (39–41 cm) at the withers with the females a little smaller, growing to between 15–15.5 inches (38–39 cm). Both males and females of the breed weigh approximately 13–14.5 kilograms (29–32 lb).

Color 

They come in solid (or "self"), parti-colored, and roan types of markings. Roan is similar to merle, but consists of solid patches and white patches speckled or "ticked" with the same color as the solid patches.

The colors themselves in the breed consist of black, liver with brown pigmentation, red with black or brown pigmentation, golden with black or brown pigmentation, sable, silver, ash, black and tan, liver and tan, blue roan, liver roan, orange roan with black or brown pigmentation, lemon roan with black or brown pigmentation, black and white ticked, liver and white ticked, orange and white ticked with black or brown pigmentation, lemon and white ticked with black or brown pigmentation, black and white, liver and white with brown pigmentation, orange and white with black or brown pigmentation, lemon and white with black or brown pigmentation.

Of the solid colors, sable is considered rare, and is classified by some countries as being a type of parti-color on account of its mixed hair shafts. White is black/brown pigmentation is also considered rare, and is also usually classified as a parti-color too.

Temperament 

Cockers are compassionate, determined, kind, intelligent, athletic, alert and resilient and make great family pets. The breed does not like being alone, and will bond strongly to an individual person in a family, usually the one who feeds it. Known for optimism, intelligence and adaptability, the breed is extremely loyal and affectionate. They rank 18th in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, being of excellent working/obedience intelligence.

English Cocker Spaniels in UK and USA/Canada have an average lifespan of 11 to 12 years, which is a typical longevity for purebred dogs, but a little less than most other breeds of their size.

The English Cocker Spaniel typically lives about a year longer than the smaller American Cocker Spaniel.

Introducing a New Puppy or Dog to your Household

Introducing a new English Cocker Spaniel puppy or dog to your household is like bringing a new kid to your home. Both parties will have to go through some big and important change.

Anyway, whether you choose to get a puppy from a responsible breeder or adopt a English Cocker Spaniel dog from a rescue group, the first two weeks for you and your new dog are a significant period of adjustment. If your dog had a previous owner, this time could be particularly stressful for him or her. Here are some tips for a smoother transition for new dog owners.

• Bring together kids and other pets separately. It may be too overwhelming if you present your new English Cocker Spaniel dog to your home, children and other pets all at once.

• Look at the diet. To avoid stomach upset, keep him on the same food his previous caretaker was using and slowly transition him to the food you want to use. If you can’t get the same food, mix rice into his new food for the first few days.

• Keep a close eye on him or her. Do not be surprised if there are accidents. Housebroken dogs can still have mishaps in a new home due to stress and confusion. Help them learn where to go by taking them outside often and watching them when they are inside to avoid accidents or other unwanted behaviors.

• Permanently identify your English Cocker Spaniel dog with a microchip. If your dog came with a microchip, you must apprise the owner information with the microchip registry. It will take time for the new dog to distinguish his new surroundings as his home and you as his new best friend. If he gets loose during this vital time, capture may be very difficult.

• Enroll in English Cocker Spaniel training classes and have fun! After about two weeks, your new dog’s personality will really start to sparkle and it’s a good time to start experiencing new activities that you and your dog can take pleasure together. Training classes are helpful and useful not only for teaching dogs basic manners and problem solving, but they will teach you how to communicate with your dog and help you bond.
